Wachtel and Adelsheim (WA) and Cowling have argued that firms in concentrated industries tend to increase their price mark-ups in recession. This hypothesis is variously tested for the Japanese manufacturing industries in 1958-82. Most of the results weakly suggest an effect opposite to WA. Only when industry-specific business conditions are taken into account, is some, albeit weak, evidence found in favor of WA.
