 COMMONLY used measures of industrial concentration can be expressed as functions of the number of firms in an industry and a measure of firm size inequality. Prior studies of the causes of industrial concentration have em- phasized factors affecting the number of firms in an industry.' We expand the study of causes of concentration by examining factors which affect the variance in market shares as a measure of firm size inequality.
